With the ongoing discussions surrounding Barbie vs. Oppenheimer dominating the movie coverage, it’s easy to overlook the fact that awards season is just around the corner. As the summer blockbuster season draws to a close, paving the way for fall prestige releases, one film stands out as a potential flagship for awards season – Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The second trailer for this highly anticipated adaptation of David Grann’s best-selling book has just been unveiled, signaling an intense and captivating cinematic experience.

Set to be released on October 20th, “Killers of the Flower Moon” has generated significant excitement. The film boasts the talents of celebrated filmmaker Martin Scorsese and reunites two of his most frequent collaborators, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s worth noting that this marks their first collaboration since “This Boy’s Life” (1993) and “Marvin’s Room” (1996).

The film’s adaptation, helmed by Eric Roth and Scorsese, revolves around a series of murders within the newly oil-rich Osage nation in 1920s Oklahoma. The Osage, who became unexpectedly wealthy overnight, find themselves at the center of a gripping mystery. Originally slated to star DiCaprio as FBI agent Tom White, the film took an unexpected turn early in production. Scorsese and DiCaprio made a conscious decision to avoid falling into the “white-savior western” trope, resulting in a switch of roles. DiCaprio now portrays suspect Ernest Burkhardt, while Jesse Plemmons takes on the role of FBI agent Tom White.

Lily Gladstone, a Native American actress who grew up on the Blackfeet reservation in Montana, delivers a powerful performance as Burkhardt’s wife, Mollie. Her exceptional acting skills have already sparked awards buzz following the film’s premiere at Cannes in May.

In the movie, De Niro portrays Burkhardt’s uncle, William Hale, a wealthy rancher, and corrupt local power broker. Hale ensnares his nephew in a nefarious scheme to exploit the newfound wealth of the Osage people. DiCaprio shared that one of the film’s biggest challenges was presenting Ernest’s true nature early on and then unravelling the complex relationship he has with both Mollie and De Niro’s characters. The journey to accomplish this dynamic took years of meticulous planning and execution.

The second trailer for “Killers of the Flower Moon” takes a more expository approach compared to the initial impressionistic teaser. It provides a deeper understanding of the Osage people, their origins, and their rise to wealth while unveiling the chilling conspiracy surrounding the murders. With an intense blend of historical context and compelling performances, “Killers of the Flower Moon” promises to captivate audiences. As the film’s release date approaches, anticipation continues to build for this potential awards season contender that combines the talents of Scorsese, De Niro, and DiCaprio in a gripping exploration of greed, corruption, and the fight for justice.
