In an exhilarating quarterfinal match of the 2023 Gold Cup, the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) emerged victorious against their familiar rivals, Canada. The game saw intense moments and captivating plays, ultimately resulting in a dramatic win for the US side.

The encounter started with a particular incident as Kamal Miller’s clearance hit the linesman’s face, causing a temporary suspension of the game. Once the match resumed, both teams initially struggled to find their rhythm. Canada struggled to gain possession and penetrate the USMNT’s defense, while the Americans displayed occasional sloppiness in their play.

However, as the game progressed beyond the 30-minute mark, the US team began to assert themselves. They launched attacks, with DeJuan Jones making a notable burst into the box in the 33rd minute, although it didn’t result in a goal. The young American side started to find their groove, retaining possession and showing promising signs.

Canada had a threatening moment in the 47th minute when Bryan Reynolds misjudged a cross, narrowly avoiding an own goal. They appealed for a penalty due to a potential handball, but the referee ruled a foul had occurred just moments before. The game continued with the US dominating possession in the second half.

Both teams resorted to fouls, with Canada receiving yellow cards for their challenges. The USMNT pushed for a breakthrough and came close with shots from Ferreira and Busio, but St. Clair, Canada’s goalkeeper, made crucial saves. The match intensified with end-to-end action, and the US finally found their breakthrough when DeJuan Jones delivered a curling ball to Brandon Vazquez, who smashed it into the net.

However, in a dramatic turn, a VAR review revealed a handball by Miles Robinson inside the penalty box. Canada was awarded a penalty, which Steven Vitoria converted, leveling the score. As the match headed into added time, both teams had opportunities, but it was Canada who capitalized as Jacob Shaffelburg slipped a shot past the US goalkeeper, Matt Turner.

Undeterred, the USMNT continued to press forward, and their persistence paid off. A fortunate deflection off a Canadian defender allowed Scott Kennedy to equalize, sending the match into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Matt Turner made a crucial save, giving the US an early advantage. However, the momentum shifted as Brandon Vazquez missed his penalty. Both teams scored their subsequent penalties, leading to a tense climax. Charles-Andreas Brym had the opportunity to keep Canada in the game, but his shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced out, securing a thrilling victory for the USMNT.

With this win, the United States advances to the 2023 Gold Cup semifinals, where they will face Panama on July 12th in San Diego.
